Oh captain, my captain!

My husband and I own a spastic cornsnake by the name of River (after River Tam of Firefly). We thought it would be cute to have our pets named as members of the Firefly cast.

So visited the shelter kittens to see which ones liked both of us. There were 3 very cute kittens, but one (a black cat) loved us but was just a little too outgoing for us, and another (a grey tabby) played for a short time then wanted nothing to do with us. Last, there was a black male cat who had stood off to the side with a very stoic feeling to him--he was quiet, but he had watched all of the other cats come to play with us very intently. When the other two kittens left to play with each other, he swaggered forward, put his paws on my knees and stared deeply into my eyes, and then did the same with my husband. Then, he sat between us and purred deeply. A powerfully built, cautious, silent, loyal cat.

We knew then that we had met the feline version of Captain Malcolm Reynolds...and that was enough to seal the deal on Malcolm as a name!
