I have always tried to find less commonly-used names for my cats over the years, but also names that don't sound too aristocratic because my cats are always mongrels and a poncy name would sound inappropriate. I have also always been interested in myth and lore, especially the gods. Five years ago when I acquired two kittens my Chinese step-daughter decided to call one Nunu - which roughly means "girl" in Chinese. When naming the other I remembered the name of the Norse god Loki - who was the god of tricks and mischief and I thought "what a perfect name for a show-off little cat" with a stubby tail, which she was. How is it that this name is not used more often? It is a male name, I know, but when dealing with the gods gender isn't all that important as they have the ability to change form whenever they want. This name suits her clowning cheeky personality perfectly.
